Operation Flood
Operation Flood was an initiative by National Dairy Development Board in 1970.It is called as white revolution of India.It created a national milk grid linking milk producers throughout India with consumers in over 700 towns and cities, which led to reduction in seasonal and regional price variations and ensured that the producer gets a major share of the price consumers pay, by cutting out middlemen.
The major objectives of the Program were-
- To increase milk production in India
- To alleviate poverty from India
- To reduce malpractices and help dairy farmers
- Fair Price for consumers
The backbone of Operation Flood has been village milk producers’ co-operatives, which procure milk and provide inputs and services, ensuring modern management and technology are available to farmers.
AMUL(Anand Milk Union Limited), founded by Tribhuvan Patel and Dr.Verghese Kurien was one of the crucial reason behind success of program.Dr.V Kurien is considered as Father of white revolution in India as he provided professional management skills, training and thurst for the program.
The mission transferred India from a milk-deficient nation into the world’s largest milk producer, surpassing the USA in 1998.
It was implemented in phase manner.
Some of the distinct and new methods adopted during operation flood were-
- Focus was given to research and development to increase productivity
- New and improved methods were used for cattle rearing, animal husbandry
- Cost reduction & technology management
- Modernization in processes and plant
- scientific methods like DNA vaccine, genetic engineering, embryo transfer were used
