National Urban Transport Policy

• National Urban Transport Policy issued in 2006 by the Ministry of Urban development, Government of India to bring the change in the Infrastructure as well as the Urban Transport services.
• The Objective of National Urban Transport policy is to make the life easier for the residents and minimize the use of own vehicles.
• Till now this policy has great impact on mobility of India and infrastructural development. Also Government of India has initiated the National Urban Renewal Mission to bring the comprehensive change in Urban development. That is one of the reason for the good economic growth of India.
• Urban population of India is 30% of its total population. The vision for this National Urban Transport Policy is simple, To reduce the pollution-Green house emissions in the environment so that we can make it livable and also to reduce the traffic for agile transportation and last to eliminate the poverty. In this way, We can have great effect on the Economical growth.
• Other important features under National Urban Transport Policy includes Innovative Finance mechanism, Uses of cleaner technologies, Capacity building, Freight Traffic, Parking, Enough allocation Road space and Transportation planning.
• Freight traffic is nothing but the density of the traffic that caused by the exponentially increasing the population of India as well as to achieve the economical goals, Freight traffic has been drastically increasing. So to avoid this traffic, There have been some innovative transportation strategies to make the by-pass roads for private and public transportation also encourages under the National Urban Renewal Mission (NURM).
• The main important aspect to implement and plan for the urban transportation system is up to State government as well as Municipal bodies. For Capacity building, There are two levels to set up for it is Individual and institutional. For development of capacity building, Governmental concerned bodies might have a meeting and discussion so that it can give profit to Urban development significantly. Central government is encouraging the use of cleaner technologies like to use the CNG (Compressed natural gas) and Electric vehicles for this effective development under the National urban renewal mission. This would be cheaper and anti-pollution for the population of India. In this way, The new technologies along with cleaner technologies has been emerging in India to develop the nation, Although it is quite challenging sometimes.
• The National Urban Transport Policy is more of a Policy framework including the general guidelines rather than the rules that should be implemented.

For example, In Ahmedabad, The BRTS (Bus Rapid Transport System) introduced In the year of 2009, Inaugurated by our Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. This BRTS system has received many awards and recognition in the Urban transportation history. Also this traffic has been monitored and controlled by the latest technologies and mythologies so that transportation should be made quick in nature without any serious hassles.

• Although, This National Urban transportation Policy (NUTP) has slight disadvantage that it ignores the physically challenged people and aged people.
• The infrastructure point of view, The National Urban transportation Policy (NUTP) has made remarkable finger prints in Road network, Enough allocation for the road space, Multi-level Parking, Parking space and universal accessibility.
• Moreover to enhance safety and thereby enhance use of non-motorized modes, The Central government is also giving the priority to the pedestrian paths and cycle tracks under the National Urban Renewal Mission (NURM).
• Almost after 10 years, Still the awareness for The National Urban transportation Policy (NUTP) has reached only 50% So the Final conclusion is that the awareness for NUTP is limited, Except Parking there are not any disagreements on NUTP. The modifications are required for the proposed features suggested by the Stake holders for National Urban transportation Policy (NUTP).
• Without the co-operation of people, These policies are not going to work. Hence the objectives of the policies should be known to all the people and it is necessary to take initiative campaign and educate from children to old aged people which could lead to “Green Travel Habits” And for this, The Governmental bodies should seek the support from the respective State or Central government for the implementation and awareness.

• The main objective of NUTP Is to make transportation cheaper, Quicker, Affordable, cleaner, Reliable and Sustainable so that India can achieve the highest economy growth to reach their destination through transportation by encouraging, Improving and cooperating with people and governmental bodies.
• Promoting New and cleaner technologies that has been introduced for maintaining the traffics and pollution. For example, Intelligent Transport System is used for the traffic management and transport systems. So that pollution and traffic must be reduced.
• In this way, The Urban development is happening through all these policies to make the India as the best for its economical as well people related growth.
