National Rural Livelihood Mission

National Rural Livelihood Mission –

1. It is a poverty alleviation project.
2. It is implemented by Ministry of Rural Development.
3. Basic idea is to organize the poor into Self Help Groups and make them capable of employment.
4. It was launched in 2011 with a capital of $5.1 Billion and was also supported by World Bank with a credit of $1Billion.
5. The objective of the mission rested upon the belief that the poor want to work their way out of poverty and they possess innate capabilities to do so.
6. Mission Statement – “To reduce poverty by enabling the poor households to access gainful self- employment and skilled wage employment opportunities resulting in appreciable improvement in their livelihoods on a sustainable basis, through building strong and sustainable grassroots institutions of the poor.”
7. Implementation –

National Urban Livelihood Mission –

1. Launched and implemented by Ministry of housing and urban poverty alleviation (HUPA)
2. It replaces Swarna Jayanti Shehri Rozgar Yojana.
3. The main reason is that urban poor have a strong desire to come out of their poverty and improve their quality of life which they are unable to do.
4. Beneficiaries include the homeless as well as the street vendors who are invariably ignored by all government programmes.
5. Up to five per cent of the NULM budget has been earmarked to provide support to urban street vendors which will include skill upgradation and development of vendor markets.
6. Urban poor, especially women, will be organized into Self Help Groups while trained personnel and infrastructure will be provided to improve the skill of the people.
7. Rs 10,000 have been earmarked for the formation of SHG’s for initial two years.
