10 things you must know about Dr.B.R Ambedkar
1. Dr.Bhimrao Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891 in Mhow (Madhya Pradesh). He was born in “untouchable” Mahar Caste. Thus was a victim of caste discrimination.
2. He graduated from Bombay University in 1912. And went to USA for higher studies. Returning from USA, he joined as Defence secretary to ruler of Baroda Sahyaji Rao III. After some time, he moved to Bombay as a as a professor of political economy at the Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics.
3. He was passionate about studies and thus in 1920 he went to England to pursue higher education. He was awarded honor of D.Sc by the London University. He got a 1 Doctorate by the University of Columbia in 1927.
4. After returning to India, he was disturbed by ongoing caste discrimination in Indian society and decided to fight against it.
5. Some of the concepts proposed by Ambedkar were separate electoral system for the Untouchables and lower caste people, providing reservations for Dalits and other religious communities. He also started a newspaper called “Mooknayaka”.
6. In 1936, Ambedkar founded the Independent Labor Party. In the 1937 elections to the Central Legislative Assembly his party got 15 seats. He was appointed on the Defence Advisory Committee and the Viceroy’s Executive Council as Minister for Labor.
7. He also worked as Law Minister of Independent India and chairman of the committee responsible to draft a constitution.In February 1948, Dr. Ambedkar presented the Draft Constitution before the people of India which came in force on November 26, 1949.
8. In October 1948, Dr. Ambedkar presented Hindu Code Bill to the Constituent Assembly with an aim to codify the Hindu law. The Bill faced criticism from many congressmen.The bill was truncated later which dejected Ambedkar.
9. On the occasion of Buddha Jayanti in year 1956, he declared to adopt Buddhism and embraced it.
10. He died on December 6, 1956. He was conferred Bharat Ratna in year 1990.
